Aboriginal inmate numbers hit ‘shocking’ level, and other reasons to fear for humanity

The latest numbers on aboriginal inmates are pretty astounding: more than a quarter of federal inmates across the country are aboriginal, and in the Prairie provinces the number is almost half: 48 per cent. For women the national figure is even worse: 36 per cent of federal prisoners are aboriginals, says Howard Sapers, the country’s prison ombudsman. Thirty years ago the numbers were only around 10 per cent. Sapers says the numbers are “shocking” and continue to rise despite being identified as a concern “year after year.”
